Learning

For the curriculum overview please see this section of the website. Reading is a focus at Southern Road and encouraging the reading of a variety of texts is an excellent way for children to develop vocabulary, spelling and comprehension skills.  These skills can assist across all areas of the school curriculum.  A child between the ages of five and seven should be reading for approximately 30 minutes each day at home.  This can easily be made up of 10 minutes reading a school book, 10 minutes reading a suitable text of their own choosing and 10 minutes sharing a story before bedtime.  As children get older this time can be increased.  Below are links to some suggested books which have been recommended by age group.

You may wish to join a library as there you will be able to access many of the books recommended, Plaistow Library is free to join and is located just a short walk from Southern Road Primary School and information on its opening times can be found here: https://www.newham.gov.uk/Pages/ServiceChild/Plaistow-Library.aspx
