Reading is a focus at Southern Road and encouraging the reading of a variety of texts is an excellent way for children to develop vocabulary, spelling and comprehension skills. These skills can assist across all areas of the school curriculum. A child between the ages of five and seven should be reading for approximately 30 minutes each day at home. This can easily be made up of 10 minutes reading a school book, 10 minutes reading a suitable text of their own choosing and 10 minutes sharing a story before bedtime. As children get older this time can be increased. Below are links to some suggested books which have been recommended by age group.
