In July 2019, The Department for Education released a document changing the previous Sex and Relationship (SRE) guidance to the new Relationships, Sex and Health guidance (RSHE).
Relationships, Sex and Health Education is lifelong learning about physical, sexual, moral and emotional development. It is about the understanding of the importance of stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care for family life. It involves acquiring information, developing skills and forming positive beliefs, values and attitudes.
By law primary schools are required to teach relationships and health education, alongside National Curriculum Science and within the context of Safeguarding.
Consultation
At Southern Road Primary School we acknowledge that parents/carers are a child’s first and most effective teacher and that is why we believe it is essential that our parents are part of the planning process and fully informed.
We are now eager to consult with you regarding your views on when and how certain content is covered.
As a result, we invite you to:
- Read the Government Guidance for RSHE
- Read our policy for Relationships and Sex Education- agreed by the Governing Board
- Read Newham Borough RSHE Consultation- inc timeline
- Read Relationships Curriculum inc LGBT FAQs
As highlighted above Schools are legally required to teach the content of the National Curriculum and as a result, what is taught is ultimately the decision for the School. The right to withdraw children from some lessons is explained in the policy.
If you would like to discuss RSHE further please indicate on the google form and someone will contact you. We are also aiming to have some zoom events for parents in the near future.
Once we have considered all your responses from the questionnaire and any subsequent parent meetings where resources will be shared our RSHE Policy will be updated and published on the Schools website. Once finalised we will then begin to adopt and teach the new curriculum in the Summer Term 2021.
If you have any queries regarding the consultation process; please do not hesitate to contact the School.
