Art is taught from Nursery to Year 6, both as a discreet subject taught by a specialist Art Teacher and as a tool to support the entire curriculum. The skills covered in every year group are:
- Drawing
- Painting
- Collage
- Printing
- 3D/sculpture
- Fabric/textiles
This is the minimal entitlement and teachers are able to use Art to support other subjects.
DT is also taught from Nursery to year 6, both as a discreet subject and as a tool to support the entire curriculum. In DT children acquire and apply the knowledge and understanding of:
- Materials and components
- Mechanisms and control systems
- Structures
- Existing products
- Quality
- Health and safety
The school is well resourced, having its own Art room where classes are able to carry out Art and DT lessons.
Art and DT are highly regarded at this school and children make very good progress from Foundation to Year 6.
Within DT pupils demonstrate originality, imagination or creativity in their work and realise their ideas and plans accurately and safely. Pupils are able to work independently and take the initiative in their work with others. Thoughts and ideas are well demonstrated.
It has been observed through Art lessons that pupils are able to develop diverse responses to both given and chosen starting points. Their enjoyment is evident and their understanding of the value of the subject is clear. Both Art and DT continue to be an effective learning tool for our pupils with EAL or SEN. Children are working visually and practically, many skills modelled without the need for words or instructions.
Every child from Year 2 to Year 6 visits at least 1 Gallery a year. We also take part in a Newham exhibition held at the UEL at the end of the academic year, where pupils and parent s are invited to attend. Art clubs run over the year for a range of ages and abilities. Staff are given CPD over year in both Art and DT. The Year 6 pupils take responsibility of the props, costumes and backdrop for the end of year school production.
