Here at Southern Road we recognise and understand the importance of children learning geographical skills that they will need in their future adult lives. We aim to deliver as many opportunities as possible for the children to be taught these skills. Below is the Geography topics the children are taught in the different year groups.
We make links where possible to other subjects e.g. use of the Digi -maps programme. Our classroom environments develop children’s learning further in Geography with working walls that aim to give children support and help with their independent studies.
We also organise a range of Educational visits to support the children’s learning in Geography such as:Year 1 as part of their curriculum visit the Seaside to learn about the sea and beaches across England and how they compare to the past years.
Year 6 undertake orienteering activities and practice map reading skills at Fair Play house.
Year 5 visit the Isle of Wight which enables them to compare schools in two very different locations.
“The study of geography is about more than just memorising places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it’s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.”
